What Type of Boiler Do I Have?
Read a little about some of the common types of boilers out on the market today (combi, heat only and system). Learn about their differences and where they may be most applicable.
Combi Boiler
This is the most common kind of boiler. A combi (short for combination) boiler has a very modest design and is accommodating in terms of space, because it does not require much of it! It supplies hot water directly to heaters and taps without storing heated water in a dedicated tank.
- Combi boilers are ideal for smaller properties due to their compact size.
- Without a cold water storage tank, lofts become available for conversion.
- The risk of freezing pipework in the loft is eliminated.
- Installation is typically cheaper due to less pipework in the home.
Conventional Boiler
Conventional boilers (also referred to as ‘regular’ boilers) typically have two reservoirs for storing water. One of the tanks functions for the boiler itself, helping the heated water expand, whereas the other supplies the mains with water.

System Boiler
Last but not least, system boilers, not unlike combi boilers, are also used to feed mains with water directly. However, the heated water is stored in a tank for a system boiler. Consequently, while a system boiler is certainly smaller than a conventional one (which requires 2 tanks), it’s still a little more complex than a combi one and would therefore need slightly more room to install.
- Suitable for households with multiple bathrooms.
- Provides a continuous flow of hot water to numerous taps simultaneously.
- Eliminates the need for a loft tank, freeing up space and removing concerns about leaks or frost damage.
- Cost-effective to operate.
